LIFE AROUND HERE - SOCIAL STUDIES AND SECRET GARDENS

Updated: Sep 23, 2022

A grade three Social Studies project turned into one of my favourite things this summer.

At the end of last school year, for her end of year Social Studies assignment, I challenged our nine year old to choose a hands on project that would help keep a Newfoundland cultural tradition alive. She had really loved learning about traditional NL architecture and wooden fences so she decided she'd like to build an old fashioned wattle fence somewhere in our yard.

We had this overgrown spot in the back of our property that the creek flowed alongside so we tidied it up and her dad helped her put down the stakes for her fence. She collected nearly all the trees herself, limbed them, and did all the weaving.

So then we decided let's put a flower garden and a bench here and make it a secret garden. Together, we tidied the creek sides and created a little rocky beach area, built rock gardens and filled them with soil and then she planted her flowers. And they're finally all blooming and it is just so beautiful and peaceful 😍 Best Social Studies project ever.
